From here you would think that it was just a simple matter of calculating the ground
speeds up to the radial from SW of Taree and matching it in to the ground speed needed
to complete the trip to the Ident point, but the more I thought about it, the more
complicated it became!
For instance, you could pick a point somewhere along this radial and work out the
ground speed (based on the Flight Plan 160 KTAS) and allowed for the drift, then
when you carried on from that point on the radial to the position where they were
identified on radar, due to the different angle to the wind and hence different drift
amounts, the ground speed would change and not calculate to fit in with the calculations
up to the radial from Taree.... a real juggling act! I did manage to get a rough
idea though using a system based on maximum and minimum error, and it was somewhere
in this area shown outlined with a white box: >>>>
After thinking over this over a long period of time, I realised there was another
way to double-check this out....
To understand how they ended up so far off track, we need to understand what was
going through the pilot's head, and why. The only way that we can really do this
is by analysing what Mike wrote in his Flight Plan:
I must point out here that as I am a pilot that operates under the “Visual Flight
Rules” (VFR), I only have a basic knowledge of how an ADF and VOR works, and lack
the knowledge on how to physically apply use of them in flight. Hence I have had
the much appreciated help from our Aero Club CFI and other instructors to bounce
my theories and suggestions off, so I cannot profess to be knowledgeable in this
matter. Check it out and please let me know if I'm wrong!
In proof reading this layout of this article, I’ve discovered that I have made a
double up of a lot of information, so have deleted it and in it’s place I’ll leave
a bigger version of the original Flight Plan and on the next page is a bigger version
of my “photoshopped” version.
The other option was to painstakingly transfer all the remaining article back page
by page and I simply don’t have the time! If it were a simple matter of just deleting
a page, then I would.
It has been too long getting this article this far, and I’m getting a little embarrassed
continually saying it is nearly finished... week after week!
