This Site is dedicated to all those families of the people that have tragically disappeared on flights in and around New Zealand. I  only hope that from all the effort in building this site and from all the effort of those taking part in this venture, that it will bear fruit in bringing ‘closure’ to their memories!

Update 19 January, 2015

I must point out at this stage, how I go about determining if what appears to be a tunnel entrance as to whether it is genuine or not. - after all, most of these photos are full of shady spots and blemishes, and if you look long enough your imagination can run wild and see ‘tunnels’ all over the place, when in fact they are not!

1/ Does it look like an entrance?

2/ Is there evidence of a track leading into it?

3/ When compared to other photos taken over the years, to any others show signs of it?

4/ Are there any eye-witness reports that fit to this location?

5/ By enhancing the photo by way of lightning, or darkening  it up, altering the gamma etc., does it still look like a tunnel?

8/ When enhancing, comparing the darkness of it to another known entrance, I.e. They should both have the same amount of blackness.

Interestingly, with one program I had, by altering the gamma way back, and taking all the shaded areas away, the only thing left visible was the darkest spots.... Tunnel entrances!

This does not work in all cases though as it all depends on the angle to the entrances the photo was shot from. In one case, I was able to pick up what may be an entrance due to the darkness, yet where I knew there were entrances (known ones that are there today) these did not show in the same photo and I put it down to the fact they were not facing directly towards the camera.

This next entrance, I was never sure that it was definitely an entrance until I started comparing it’s position over several years of photos.

I first noticed the possibility of it in this 1939 image and also the 1942 photo on page 36 marked as “a” and shown zoomed in below:

You can see what appears to obviously be quite a large entrance and in this shot partly obscured on the bottom right by a tree. On the left is another tree, and you can observe these trees in the above 1939 photo.

In this 1947 one, you can see the entrance and a well worn track leading from it.

And again in this 1952 photo, you can observe this track and you will note that as in the 1947 photo it disappears behind trees and then appears again leading up into what appears may be another entrance. This other entrance may be exactly that or just an illusion

as  I don’t have a high enough  resolution photo taken on the correct angle to verify it, although in these photos and the photos on the next page tend to suggest that it most likely is a small entrance .
