This Site is dedicated to all those families of the people that have tragically disappeared on flights in and around New Zealand. I only hope that from all the effort in building this site and from all the effort of those taking part in this venture, that it will bear fruit in bringing ‘closure’ to their memories!
Gavin Grimmer
George Furnell (stationed there in 1951 to 55):
“At the very top of NH is an old gun pit, running off it was a tunnel which eventually
ended up in a large hallway capable of holding 50 or 60 men. It was like walking
down a very steep ramp and it took quite a long time to get to the bottom.”
and Peter Eddy (Stationed 1950 to 1952):
“At the summit of the hill is an old gun pit, between the two existing entrances
which run off the pit was a third entrance which went down a very steep ramp.”
The above two diagrams taken from what is known as the “Mitchell Report”, show basically
what the summit tunnel complex was like in 1892 to 1904 (on the left) and on the
right what it is like now.
You’ll note there used to be a 7” gun on the LH side (northern side) and this deeply
hollowed out area shown in the 1942 photo above is the remains of it. You can observe
the encasement and end of the tunnel that led to this gun in the photo here with
the arrows from “c” pointing to it, and obviously I can’t say for sure, but “b”
appears to be another opening at a level below the “C” level. “A” also looks very
much like quite a large tunnel entrance into the main battery. The bottom arrow
is just another possibility.
Peter Eddy’s account does sound very much like he probably was talking about the
main battery as does George Furnell’s, but either of them could also be talking about
this one as they were at North Head before the time this area was leveled with
the claim of making it easier to mow.
