This Site is dedicated to all those families of the people that have tragically disappeared on flights in and around New Zealand. I  only hope that from all the effort in building this site and from all the effort of those taking part in this venture, that it will bear fruit in bringing ‘closure’ to their memories!

Update 5th December 2014

In this area there are several extra tunnel entrances shown on old photographs that are not there today.  I will attempt to demonstrate them here starting with the eastern facing one:

As you can see in these photos above, it appears that this entrance may have been recently built in 1942 judging by what appears to be fresh earth at the mouth of it, although this may be just a reflection of sunlight from short shiny grass or the like.  The 1940 photos that I have show no sign of this, although they are not that clear. Note the early stages of the camouflaging being carried out in 29-04-1942. In the first two photos, there appears to be another entrance just to the lower right of the disappearing gun in the first photo and just below and slightly to the left of that gun in the second... although this could just be an illusion.  The third photo shows a well worn track leading from this entrance down towards the Old Eastern Generator Room, and on the fourth (1954) the Plinth that is still there today is visible.

In this higher resolution photo (above, also dated 29-04-1942), the Plinth is also visible and if you look closely you can see the worn track leading down over the top of the Old Generator Room. Where the track goes from there is unknown. On the next page, I have placed this same photo without the explanation additions to make it clearer to see.
